Where laminate flooring works, and where it does not

Laminate is a good floor in the right room. The rooms where it goes wrong are easy to spot, so here they are before you pick a color.

Bedrooms and living rooms

Dry rooms with ordinary foot traffic are where laminate earns its place. It gives you a crisp wood look for less than vinyl plank or engineered hardwood.

Upstairs

A second floor sits on a wood subfloor rather than the slab, so laminate's weak spot, moisture coming up from below, mostly goes away.

When the budget is the deciding line

Laminate is the lowest up-front cost of the three floors we install. If the whole house needs doing and the number matters most, it is often the honest answer.

Bathrooms and laundry rooms

Laminate has a wood-fibre core. Standing water gets into the seams and the boards swell, and a swollen board does not go back. Wet rooms get vinyl plank.

A slab that has had water before

If a room has flooded or a slab stays damp, we will tell you at the walkthrough and point you at a waterproof floor instead.

Big dogs and heavy wear

Laminate's hard surface can chip at the edges where vinyl plank would flex. For a house that is hard on floors, we will show you both before you choose.

Laminate on a Houston slab, done properly

Most laminate that fails in this city was laid straight onto a slab nobody flattened or protected. The floor itself was fine. These four steps are what stop that happening.

The slab gets flattened

Laminate is a rigid floating floor, so any dip or high spot in the slab shows up as boards that rock or gap. We grind and level first, and it is priced as its own line so you see it before anything starts.

A moisture barrier goes down

On a Houston slab, laminate goes over an underlayment with a moisture barrier. It is the difference between a floor that lasts and one that cups at the seams.

Room to move is left at the edges

Laminate expands and contracts with the humidity. The gap at the walls is what lets it, and baseboard and quarter round are what hide it.

Transitions and trim to finish

Doorways, the joins to other floors, baseboard and quarter round. The last day is the one that decides whether the floor looks installed or finished.

Is laminate flooring waterproof?

No. Some laminate is sold as water-resistant, which means a spill wiped up quickly will not hurt it. Water that sits in the seams will swell the core. That is why we put laminate in dry rooms and vinyl plank in kitchens, bathrooms and laundry rooms.

Laminate or vinyl plank: which should I get?

If the room can get wet, vinyl plank. If it is a dry room and cost matters most, laminate is often the better value. Plenty of houses end up with both. We will walk the rooms with you and tell you where each one belongs.

Can laminate go on a concrete slab?

Yes, and most Houston houses are on one. It needs the slab flat, a moisture barrier underlayment, and a gap left at the walls. Skip any of the three and the floor gaps or lifts within a year or two.

How long does a laminate install take?

It clicks together with no glue to cure, so you can walk on it as soon as it is down. How many days depends on the square footage and whether the slab needs leveling first, and we will tell you the schedule when we quote.

Do you take out the old floor?

Yes. Taking up carpet, tile, vinyl or an old wood floor is part of the job when you need it, priced as its own line on the written quote.

How much does laminate installation cost?

A new floor, supplied and installed, starts at $6 a square foot, material included. Laminate is the lowest-cost of the three floors we install. The real number depends on the room size, the product and what the slab needs, and we put it on paper after the walkthrough.
