The wood floor built for Houston houses

Three reasons it is the wood floor we recommend here, and three things to know before you choose it.

Real wood on top

The surface you walk on is a layer of real wood, with the grain, the color changes and the feel that a printed floor imitates.

A core built not to move

Underneath is a layered core that holds its shape. Solid planks swell and shrink with Houston's humidity; engineered moves far less, which is why it is the wood floor that suits this climate.

It can be renewed later

Depending on the thickness of the top layer, an engineered floor can be sanded and refinished by a refinisher years from now. Vinyl plank and laminate cannot.

It is not waterproof

Engineered hardwood is still wood. Kitchens with a careful household can work; bathrooms and laundry rooms should get vinyl plank.

It costs more

Engineered is the most expensive of the three floors we install, mostly in the material. It is worth it when real wood is what you want.

It will show wear

Wood dents and scratches. Many people like that it ages; if you want a floor that looks new for years under big dogs, look at vinyl plank too.

The Houston part

Engineered hardwood on a slab

Most Houston houses are built on a concrete slab, and a wood floor over concrete has two enemies: moisture coming up and a surface that is not flat. Engineered handles the first far better than solid wood. The second is on the installer.

So the slab gets checked and flattened before a board goes down, the floor is either glued or floated over a moisture barrier depending on the product, and the last day is transitions, baseboard and quarter round. Every one of those is a line on your written quote before anything starts.

What is the difference between engineered and solid hardwood?

Solid hardwood is one piece of wood all the way through. Engineered hardwood has a real wood top layer bonded to a layered core. From above they look the same. The core is what makes engineered more stable in Houston's humidity and suitable for a concrete slab. We install engineered hardwood. Solid hardwood is a different trade with different tools.

Can engineered hardwood go on a concrete slab?

Yes, that is one of its main advantages. On a slab it is either glued down or floated over an underlayment with a moisture barrier. Which one depends on the product and on the slab, and we decide it at the walkthrough after we have looked at both. Either way the slab has to be flat first.

Is engineered hardwood good in Houston?

It is the wood floor that suits Houston best, because the core holds its shape through the humidity swings that make solid planks gap and cup. It is not waterproof, so it belongs in living areas and bedrooms rather than bathrooms.

Can engineered hardwood be refinished?

Often, yes, depending on how thick the top layer is. That work is done by a refinisher. We install floors; we do not sand or refinish them.

Engineered hardwood or vinyl plank?

If you want real wood and the room stays dry, engineered. If the room can get wet, or you want the most forgiving floor for kids and pets, vinyl plank. We carry both to the walkthrough so you can hold them side by side.

How much does engineered hardwood installation cost?

More than vinyl plank or laminate, mostly because of the material. The species, the width and what the slab needs all move the number, so we price it after the walkthrough rather than quoting a figure here that would not survive it.
